PGConf.dev 2026 Developer Unconference

Postgres and other communities

The Postgres community has become increasingly successful by onboarding new members and nurturing existing ones. However, it has now reached a point where it needs to expand beyond its cozy bubble. Some communities are more open to collaboration than others, so outreach often needs to happen through personal connections.

This un-conference discussion focused on how the Postgres community can strategically expand beyond its traditional circles by building stronger relationships and networks with adjacent communities. It also explored ways to maximize the use of the broader PostgreSQL community’s resources through collaboration and outreach.

  • Postgres Conferences
    • Booth space (Community booths exchange)
    • Speaker opportunities (Invite their speakers)
  • Speakers
    • We could have a Task Force of experienced Postgres speakers that will:
      • Brainstorm ideas on how to wrap Postgres topics in non-Postgres developer conferences (how to package it so that it sends a clear message what is postgres and why it’s important to know how it works)
      • Help to onboard new postgres speakers
    • Speakers Bureau https://wiki.postgresql.org/wiki/Speaker_Bureau - we have it but needs to be better at keeping updated
  • Social media
    • Cross pollination does it happen - PgUS doesn’t actively repost non-Postgres content
    • Using Luma to automate posts / Buffer for PgUS for posts
    • We can have one person doing the posting, since managing who has access to the social media accounts is essential. Coming up with posts is the job of committees and organisers, not of person that does posts
  • External Conferences
    • Send our (Postgres) speakers
    • PG Community Booth e.g. https://datastackconf.com/
    • Meetups (giving slide with events we have and they could go)
    • Hosting joint User Group events (cross pollination sessions across groups)
    • Invite them to come to our meetups to give talks and vice-versa
    • Share a slide listing postgres events to show at their meetups
  • GSoC
    • many use Postgres as a backend for their projects
    • Send email to GSoC mentors list and propose to connect
    • Join GSoC Mentor Summit in Frankfurt and connect in-person
    • Contact section on the website to ask people for ideas from the community - some of the best ideas come from there
  • How do you carry Postgres with you when you go to ex-Postgres events:
    • Consider events from other communities
    • Create connections
    • Volunteer to speak at meetups
    • Ribbons “Ask me about Postgres” - Pat Wright planning to make those
    • Using PostgreSQL lanyards when going to other conferences
    • Sticker or pin when you go to other events - is good as conversation starter
    • Postgres hoodies
    • Postgres Stickers at individual company booths at non-postgres conferences
    • Have a checklist and a toolkit that people can refer to when preparing to go to a non-Postgres conference. For example: lanyard, badge ribbon, stickers. We could make these kits and give them to people at conferences.

There was also a comment that:

  • There is a lack of understanding for developers from other communities:
    • Where expertise is needed
    • Where I can contribute

So we need to think how to address that. (Potentially on the website postgresql.org, we could have an FAQ for developers from other communities higlighting benefits of Postgres, case studies, ways for users to contribute)
