If you have an account on the community jabber server with Pidgin, make sure to use:

• Advanced
  • Require SSL/TLS checked
  • Force old (port 5223) SSL checked
  • Allow plaintext auth over unencrypted screens unchecked
  • Connection port: 5223
  • Connect Server: jabber.postgresql.org
  • File transfer proxies: <not needed>
