Main Responsibilities

The Gopher volunteer role is a broad and flexible task. Gophers are generally available throughout the entire conference and handle any kind of special or unexpected requests that may arise.

Think of this role as a general-purpose support position and a go-to contact for situations that fall outside standard volunteer duties. This may include assisting organisers, attendees, or sponsors with urgent needs or last-minute coordination.

Usually, more than one volunteer is assigned to this role to ensure coverage and responsiveness.

Who Can Be a Gopher

Because this task may occasionally involve decision-making related to finances, logistics, or sponsor relations, the Gopher role is typically reserved for board members or senior organisers who are familiar with conference operations and have the authority to make such decisions.

Additional Notes

  • Gophers should be reachable at all times during the conference (via phone, messaging app, or walkie-talkie).
  • They often act as liaisons between volunteers, organisers, and venue staff.
  • Tasks can vary widely — flexibility, calmness, and clear communication are key.
  • When in doubt, coordinate with the main organising team before making decisions involving costs or contracts.
