As mentioned in the "Supported platforms", Atlassian recommends PostgreSQL as the best database for use with JIRA.
"Having reviewed this position recently, we believe there are benefits for customers in using PostgreSQL. In addition to being tested to the same standard as all of our databases PostgreSQL is used;...This means we do more dogfooding and see more real world usage of PostrgreSQL than any of our other supported databases. That's why we now recommend you choose PostgreSQL for your JIRA server instance."
