These are a set of instructions for building Postgres from a source archive.

Acquire the source code

From Github

The mirror of Postgres on Github provides a "download a zip archive"

You can wget the source from i.e.

 ftp://ftp.postgresql.org/pub/source/v9.3.2/postgresql-9.3.2.tar.bz2

Per OS instructions

Redhat

The following packages are needed for building Postgres, including ssl support:

sudo yum install -y bison-devel readline-devel zlib-devel openssl-devel wget
sudo yum groupinstall -y 'Development Tools'

Ubuntu

The following packages are needed for building Postgres, including ssl support:

sudo apt-get install build-essential libreadline-dev zlib1g-dev flex bison libxml2-dev libxslt-dev libssl-dev
